No Man's Sky is an action-adventure survival video game developed and published by the indie studio Hello Games for PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows. The game was released worldwide in August 2016.
No Man's Sky received a wide range of reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. While many praised the technical achievement of No Man's Sky's procedurally-generated universe, several critics found that the nature of the game can become repetitive and monotonous, with the survival gameplay elements being lackluster and tedious.
No Man's Sky developed a dedicated fan-base before its release, with many congregating in a subreddit to track and share information published about the game. Sam Zucchi writing for Kill Screen proposed that the players anxiously awaiting No Man's Sky were a kind of religion, putting faith in Hello Games to be able deliver an experience that has otherwise never been offered by video games before, the ability to explore a near-infinite universe.
